Dr. Joel M. Crawford, Audio Engineer

Recording at Werner Hall - University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music

About Joel - Classical Specialist Audio Engineer

I bring a depth of knowledge in audio recording that focuses on classical and jazz,
but also includes and popular styles.
My over 15 years of extensive professional experience in location recording includes: solo and chamber recitals, wind bands, brass bands, chamber and massed choirs, orchestras, large scale orchestra and choir works,
operas, musicals, jazz combos and big bands, rock shows, music festivals, and more.
I have worked with many schools as well as professional and community arts organizations around the region including: The University of Cininnati College-Conservatory of Music, CCM Wind Symphony, CCM Wind Ensemble, CCM Choral, CCM Mens and Womens Choirs, CCM Student and Faculty Recitals, CCM Student and Faculty Recording Projects, Coro Volante, The Cincinnati Camerata, members of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Pops Brass, The Lexington Philharmonic, Lexington Chamber Choral, Lexington Singers, Lexington Brass Band, EKU Wind Ensemble, Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Bluegrass Area Jazz Ambassadors, The Metrognomes Big Band, Bluegrass Opera, and the Great American Brass Band Festival.
Additionally I have been involved in all aspects of recording for the University of Kentucky School of Music including: student/faculty/guest recitals, UK Bands, UK Orchestras, UK Choirs,
UK Jazz Program, UK Opera Theater, and the UK RocKats.
My studio experience includes: solo and chamber groups, jazz, rock, funk, soul, pop, and country.
I served as an assistant engineer for four years at DBH Sound where I learned and was trained in
the recording arts. My previous experience also includes three years working as a recording engineer
for the University of Kentucky School of Music. My audio engineering experience also includes work in live sound reinforcement, with experience working with rock, funk, soul, classical, and jazz styles, including mixing
FOH for The Trendells, Soul Explosion, and The RocKats.

I have a background as a classically trained musician and have performed throughout the United States
as well as concert tours and music festivals in Europe and China. As an experienced musician,
I know how to work with musicians at all levels, understand their needs, and facilitate a recording
process that lets them focus on the performance and in the case of live recordings, their audience.

My formal music education includes Bachelors (BM -University of Iowa), Masters
(MM - Bowling Green State University), as well as Doctoral of Musical Arts
(DMA - University of Kentucky) degrees in music performance.
I have served on university music faculties as both a graduate assistant and instructor, and work effectively with performance and ensemble faculty as well as administrators in facilitating projects.

I strive to not just make a ‘good’ recording, but to help you bring your music to your listeners
the way you intend it to be heard. Though every step of the process the focus is always on the music and
how to express your musicianship and creativity.

Please feel free to contact me and ask as many questions as you would like. While I find that
many engineers seek to keep some mystery to exactly what it is we do, I try to be open and transparent
with my work and am happy to discuss any techniques, from mic placement to mastering techniques,
I may use on your project. I also do consulting for both schools and universities, and can assist with
everything from small recording carts to large scale recording and sound installations.
